DHBO’s Dual Strength Libido has been carefully formulated to deliver active dosages of the EFSA endorsed ingredients, Zinc, Selenium, Vitamin E, B6 and B12, which all support male sexual health. Receiving adequate dosage of these ingredients is critical. For example, zinc deficiency is prevalent throughout the world. Serum testosterone levels have been positively correlated with dietary zinc. Zinc supplementation in zinc-deficient normal older men resulted in an increase in serum testosterone levels (Prasad et al., 1996). Zinc has antioxidant properties and the levels of zinc in seminal fluid shows a positive correlation with sperm count and normal morphology (Colagar et al., 2009). Similarly, plasma selenium levels has also been positively correlated with dietary intake. In a study where volunteers were fed a selenium –deficient diet, plasma levels of selenium fell along with a reduction in sperm motility. Interestingly, selenium concentrations fell in the seminal plasma but not in the sperm (Hawkes & Turek, 2013). In a separate study, a supplement containing Vitamin E (400mg) and selenium (225 mcg) was found to improve sperm mobility in infertile subjects (Keskes-Ammar et al., 2003).

Alongside the EFSA endorsed ingredients, Dual Strength Libido contains a number of ingredients that have been implicated through scientific studies to support male sexual health.

American Gingseng (Panax quinquefolius) is commonly used in Chinese and herbal medicine. Ginseng root contains saponin compounds of the dammarane type as its main biologically active components. These compounds are metabolized to protopanaxadiol compounds including 20-O-beta-D-glucopyranasyl-20(S)protopanaxadiol (M1). M1 is frequently referred to as IH-901 and compound-K. In a double-blind placebo controlled crossover study, (8 weeks on treatment, 2 weeks washout, and 8 weeks on treatment) 45 patients were given 900mg of ginseng 3 times per day. Mean International Index of Erectile Function scores were significantly higher in patients treated with ginseng than those who received a placebo. The authors concluded that ginseng may be an effective alternative for treating male erectile dysfunction (Hong et al. 2002; WebMD).

It has been long recognized that caffeine enhances energy expenditure and elevates body temperature (thermogenesis) in a broad cross section of body types and age groups (Dulloo et al., 1989; Arciero et al., 1995). Energy drinks containing caffeine, taurine and niacin have been shown to improve endurance performance in trained cyclists (Ivy et al., 2009). In addition, a dose independent effect that has been found with capsules containing caffeine alone (Pasman et al., 1995). The latter effect has been attributed to caffeine-induced stimulation of higher rates of fat oxidation (Costill et al., 1978). Caffeine also improves reaction time and alertness and reduces mental fatigue (Haskell et al., 2005).

Arginine has been proposed as of benefit for men’s sexual health based on it being a precursor for NO formation in the blood, an important trigger for the relaxation of smooth muscle and increased vascular flow. It has been studied in combination with pycnogenol, an extract from French Maritime Pine Bark. 40 sufferers of erectile dysfunction (ED) were treated with arginine aspartate, a dipeptide containing a dose of L-Arginine of 1.7g/d for a month. Several participants experienced normal erections with arginine alone (Stanislavov & Nikolova, 2003).

The presence of reduced levels of antioxidants in human semen has been linked with reduced fertility. Lycopene is one such antioxidant and dietary supplementation has resulted in increased levels in the semen (Goyal et al., 2007). Coenzyme Q10 is an energy promoting agent and antioxidant. Oral supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 has been shown to increase sperm motility (Balercia et al., 2009) and sperm count (Safarinejad, 2009) in placebo controlled clinical trials. Supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 has been reported to increase fertility rates amongst patients with low fertilization rates (Lewin & Lavon, 1997).
